HDCP 2.2 COPYRIGHT PROTECTION FOR 4K

HDCP 2.2 COPYRIGHT PROTECTION FOR 4K

HDCP 2.2 is the newest generation of copyright protection for the 4K era, and it likely won’t work with any of your current gear. Here’s what you need to know when it comes to your business moving with the times.

What it means?

HDMI 2.0 is not the only standard you have to abide by when thinking of an Audio Visual design, the arrival of 4K resolution has brought with it HDCP 2.2 (High-bandwidth digital Content Protection).

Content protection is nothing new, previously referred to as CSS on early DVDs but the arrival of Bluray brought with it the need for Hollywood Studios to protect their rights and licensing hence HDCP was born.

HDCP ensures a secure encrypted connection (Handshake) from source to display e.g Bluray to TV. It’s sophistication and the headaches it can bring are not limited to HDMI but can also be used with DVI, Displayport or USB.

How will it affect you and your business?

If you are careful enough to stick with 1080P source content you will not be affected but new consumer and corporate Laptop devices to the market such as Apple Macs and a few other Manufacturers are designed to output 4K resolution for presentations and by default will use HDCP 2.2

This also presents an issue when we introduce Audio & Video switchers between the source and display to allow multiple presenters share their content or to Duplicate displays in a meeting / conference room.

We would encourage anybody considering investing in any new Audio Video Solution to ensure they use a competent integrator that will ensure every component within the chain is compatible and future proof your new system.
